Those who pass the oral boards will have a background check conducted. An investigator will confirm your eligibility by contacting references, past employers, and family & friends. They will also check your criminal history and your driving history
Applicants who pass the background check will be interviewed by the Chief of Police or designee. The Chief then makes the final decision regarding hiring.

Those who have already graduated from a Basic Peace Officer Academy will start as a Police Officer. Every licensed new hire must complete our Field Training Program.
Once hired and licensed, new officers will have to complete a 16-week Field Training Program before they can work on their own as a Police Officer. Cadets will be required to take on more workload and responsibility as the program progresses and will be expected to operate as an independent officer at the end of the program. If you work hard and perform well, your progress could be accelerated!
Communication Officers also go through a Field Training Program once they are hired. During the program, they are trained in the proper way to answer calls, what information to gather from callers, radio usage, and in the use of the Computer Aided Dispatching system.
Police Officer Trainees and Communication Officers that successfully complete the Field Training Program will be promoted to full duty.
Additional training opportunities will be available and the Schertz Police Department will facilitate training to keep employees in compliance with any mandates required to maintain their licensure.
