City staff is working on expanding the trail network in Schertz and with that comes the development of a trail branding program. The Schertz Trails logo, trail mile-marker signage, and trail maps will all be developed as we add more trail networks to the system. Long-range plans include the Cibolo Creek Trail, Dry Comal Creek Trail, and the Woman Hollering Creek Trail. Stay tuned to Schertz.com for more information on these exciting projects.
Great Northern Trail
The Great Springs Project
City staff is very excited to be working with the staff at The Great Springs Project to help further their mission of a regional trail system connecting four of Texas’ Great Springs: Barton Springs, San Marcos Springs, Comal Springs, and San Antonio Springs. The goal is to create a green corridor and trail network from the Alamo to the Capitol. Schertz’ trail plans for The Great Northern Trail, the Dry Comal Creek Trail, and the Cibolo Creek Trail are important connecting pieces in this greater regional trail network. City staff recently hosted a Trail Connect meeting where a group of staff from the cities of Schertz, Cibolo, Selma, Universal City, Garden Ridge, and New Braunfels shared trail plans and discussed future connections between the cities. Stay tuned for more good trail news to come!Schertz Trail Blazers
Trail Blazers are independent volunteers who model safety and respect for all trail users and wildlife, help protect and preserve local flora and fauna along the trails by reporting vandalism and obtain information that can be used by staff to set policy on safety (bike speed limits, more signage, dog control, etc.). Be our eyes and ears on the trail, volunteer at Schertz.com.Schertz Trails Master Plan
Schertz residents have listed trails, and walking & biking opportunities, as their top priority in citizen surveys and the Schertz Parks Master Plan since at least 2013. In 2017 the City’s Master Thoroughfare Plan was completed and this provided a framework for future transportation needs in the city, including trails, sidewalks, and bike lanes. A copy of the Master Thoroughfare Plan can be found at Schertz.com/161/Engineering and the Trails Network can be found on Page 25 of the document. This master plan provides the framework from which city staff has been working to expand the trail network.West Dietz Creek Trail
You did it, Schertz! The public support for this project, combined with its technical score means the West Dietz Creek Trail Project is being recommended for funding in the FY 25-28 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The formal approval of the FY 25-28 TIP will take place at the AAMPO Transportation Advisory Board's January meeting and official award letters are to be mailed to recipients on February 1, 2024. These TIP projects are an 80/20 match program, with the local government providing 20% of the $1,250,000 project cost. The project includes constructing a 1.76-mile long, 10-foot-wide concrete trail along West Dietz Creek beginning just south of Wiederstein Road and crossing Savannah Drive, Maske Road, and ending at Schertz Parkway where it can connect with the Campus Exercise Trail behind the Hal Baldwin Municipal Complex.
