Sweetheart News Arbor Day the Schertz Way : Schertz Sweethearts Join Voluteers to Plant 50 Trees!
It's Arbor Day every day in Schertz, but April 25, 2008 was special. In celebration of the Schertz 50 th Anniversary Committee, 50 trees were planted by 50 volunteers, and the Guadalupe County Master Gardners who were working towards 50 hours of community service time. Dubbed the 50/50, this year's event took place at the Schertz Municipal Complex ( 1400 Schertz Parkway ), and the attached Schertz Ballpark. Organized as a fundraiser for the Schertz Parks and Recreation Foundation, twenty-five of the fifty trees were purchased as commemorative trees by individuals with the remaining trees being purchased through the City's tree mitigation fund. With the help of the Schertz Parks and Recreation Department, the Schertz Sweetheart Court, the Schertz Fire Department, and numerous volunteers from Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe Counties , the trees were carefully set in their permanent location in little over 3 hours. A plaque dedication ceremony is being planned by the 50 th Anniversary Committee for later in the summer. For those who missed the opportunity to sponsor commemorative trees, fear not! Trees are available for sponsorship year ‘round. And, according to Schertz Parks and Recreation Department Director George Logan, each time 25 trees are sponsored, the City of Schertz will match that with 25 trees and hold a tree planting event. “It's Arbor Day everyday in Schertz!” said Logan . “I hope we will always have people who want to make Schertz a tree- rich environment.” To sponsor a tree, contact the Schertz Parks and Recreation Department at 210-619-1600 .
