Arbor Day the Schertz Way : Schertz Volunteers Plant 50 Trees!
It's Arbor Day every day in Schertz, but April 25, 2008 was special. In celebration of the Schertz 50 th Anniversary Committee, 50 trees were planted by 50 volunteers, and the Guadalupe County Master Gardners who were working towards 50 hours of community service time. Dubbed the 50/50, this year's event took place at the Schertz Municipal Complex ( 1400 Schertz Parkway ), and the attached Schertz Ballpark.
Organized as a fundraiser for the Schertz Parks and Recreation Foundation, twenty-five of the fifty trees were purchased as commemorative trees by individuals with the remaining trees being purchased through the City's tree mitigation fund.
With the help of the Schertz Parks and Recreation Department, the Schertz Sweetheart Court , the Schertz Fire Department, and numerous volunteers from Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe Counties , the trees were carefully set in their permanent location in little over 3 hours. A plaque dedication ceremony is being planned by the 50 th Anniversary Committee for later in the summer.
For those who missed the opportunity to sponsor commemorative trees, fear not! Trees are available for sponsorship year ‘round. And, according to Schertz Parks and Recreation Department Director George Logan, each time 25 trees are sponsored, the City of Schertz will match that with 25 trees and hold a tree planting event. “It's Arbor Day everyday in Schertz!” said Logan . “I hope we will always have people who want to make Schertz a tree- rich environment.” To sponsor a tree, contact the Schertz Parks and Recreation Department at 210-619-1600 . A copy of the tree donation form is available HERE .

residential trash-pickup rates will increase an average of $1.30 cents

Waste, Inc., was approved by the Schertz City Council on February 4, 2008
. According to Bexar Waste, Inc. owner Henry Gutierrez, average residential

Ground Broken for New Schertz Library In what can only be described as a proud moment for so many Schertz residents, ground was broken February 29th on a new 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art library to be located adjacent to the current library at the intersection of Elbel Rd. and Schertz Parkway .
Less than two years after voters authorized $6 million in bonds to match a $1 million donation by Schertz business owners Caroline & Eric White, O'Haver Contractors of San Antonio began leveling the site after a brief ceremony that included attendees from the surrounding three counties.
Schertz Director of Library Grants and Fundraising Gail Douglas led the ceremony with Schertz Mayor Hal Baldwin. Selma Mayor Jim Parma, Cibolo Mayor Jennifer Hartman, Guadalupe County Commissioner Jim Wolverton, and State Representative Edmund Kuempel were all present as members of the Schertz City Council, Library Boardand staff, and other contributors to the effort posed with golden shovels to mark the official start of work.
The current library, located off Schertz Parkway in downtown Schertz, was built in 1983 and expanded to its current 9,000 square footage in 1989. In 2005, the White's of Garden Ridge Pottery fame, donated $1 million towards the construction of a new library, which received its final blessing in the form of $6 million in bonds from voters in May 2006. In March 2007, Schertz hired the design firm of Kell~Munoz to spearhead coordination of the design of the new library. The new facility will contain children and adult reading areas, public meeting spaces, technology areas, and courtyard areas.
According to the O'Haver Contractors, if all goes according to schedule, the project can be completed in 11 months.

October 17, 2007 The area has experienced an enormous growth of trees and vegetation this past spring and summer. This growth has caused numerous issues such as: clearance for emergency vehicles, school buses, garbage trucks, and street sweepers. These problems are caused by overhanging branches and vegetation protruding in the streets, alleys, easements, and sidewalks. Traffic and pedestrian visibility is also impaired due to the excessive growth of this vegetation.
City code provides that there be a minimum clearance of 15ft. from the street surface, a minimum clearance of 15ft. over alley/easements, and a minimum clearance of 8ft. over sidewalks. City code also prohibits any vegetation, fences, or structures over 36" in height above the road within the visibility triangle. The visibility triangle is the distance from each corner of converging streets to a distance of 25ft. along each corner with the triangle completed by drawing a line through the property from both 25ft. distances.
The tree branches and cuttings must also be disposed of in a proper manner such as taking them to a landfill, bundling them up for trash service or contacting Public Works for the chipping service. When using the trash service, the bundles must not be more than 4ft. in length, tree branches no more than 3 inches in diameter, weigh no more than 60 lbs., and be tied with twine.
Code Enforcement needs help from every citizen to keep their property maintained in a proper manner and to make the City of Schertz a safer place to live.

October 5, 2007 Lock-Up a Holiday Sourpuss for Blue Santa Do you know any grinches or scrooges who need a little help getting into the holiday spirit? Do you want to turn in a friend for offending Santa? Or do you simply want to get back at a co-worker? If so you should participate in the 6th Annual Holiday Lock-up sponsored by the City of Schertz. For one day only the Schertz Police Department will lock-up your Ebenezer and even forget to read them their rights. That's right, you can have a friend, family member, or co-worker (boss even) locked up during the annual Holiday Lock-up slated for November 13, 2007 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Each curmudgeon who is locked away is "asked" to raise $100 from associates and friends in order to pay their bail. Lockup “criminals” will spend time in a portable jail (which will be conveniently located in front of City Hall), until he or she is able to raise sufficient bail funds. Funds raised during the annual event help support the Blue Santa program, which exists to help needy families during the holidays. If you would like to participate in this year's lock-up, contact Erin Matlock at 619-1072 or Patti White at 619-1062. A personal arrest and transportation to the lock-up by the Schertz P.D. can be arranged in advance of the event (as well as round-trip taxi-service).
October 4, 2007 Wedding Parade 2007 Slated for November 25, 2007 --- Schertz Civic Center The Schertz Civic Center is hosting its first ever bridal show dubbed The Wedding Parade 2007. The coordinator of this event, A Moment In Time Videography and Wedding Planning owner Maggie Titterington is delighted to be able to use the beautiful facility. "The city of Schertz as well as the facilitators of the Civic Center has been marvelous in helping to make this dream a reality." A Schertz girl herself moving into the city in 1973, Maggie graduated from Samuel Clemens High School and dabbled in a lot of careers before settling on videography and wedding planning. "The two go hand in hand almost. As you shoot a wedding, you are having to organize certain aspects of the wedding and reception happenings. I love being a part of a couple's special day, whether videotaping it or, even better, coordinating it. With wedding planning, I get to create a beautiful day that this couple begins their married life with. It's not only a privilege but an honor."
The idea for this show sprang up in Maggie's mind when she read an article about Schertz being number 40 in America for up and growing communities. "I've seen a lot of changes in Schertz from 1973 and small business is really starting to take off. I felt this could be the opportunity to create a family atmosphere of businesses working together to not only promote but get to know each other. Schertz has a lot to offer brides planning their weddings. Why drive across town when you can walk outside your own front door?
Schertz businesses offer not only florists but cake bakers, rehearsal as well as reception venues, caterers and specialty gift shops, just to name a few. With time a precious commodity in planning weddings, it's great to know that the person or business you need is close by. What better way to meet all of these vendors than seeing them under one roof?"
And what a roof - the Civic Center has a lot to offer as a reception venue. From the Bluebonnet Room, for modest weddings on a smaller scale to the main room which boasts an audio visual booth with a screen that retracts into the ceiling, the Civic Center offers quiet elegance with modern technology. The Wedding Parade will showcase all of its features from playing video on the screen to the designing of lighting for each area.
Since it is free to the public, attendance is expected to be high. There will be free samples of catering, wedding cakes, beauty services such as air brush makeup, mini facials and massage, live D.J. services and videography samples as well as mock set ups of reception areas within the Civic Center. A Moment In Time Videography and Wedding Planning will also host a question and answer session throughout the day for brides and grooms who are not sure what the basics are in planning their wedding. A big highlight will also be the raffles taking place throughout the day which will range from gift certificates, actual products and free services.
"I am looking forward to this event, not only for the opportunity to meet prospective brides and grooms but also to bring quite a few of the Schertz businesses together in a fun atmosphere. I've had the opportunity and privilege to work with a lot of these vendors and am looking forward to introducing them to the public."
Wedding Parade 2007 is scheduled for November 25, 2007 and runs from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Schertz Civic Center. For updated more information about the event checkout the Schertz Civic Center Website. Vendors should call 210-290-8572.

McGruff, the crime fighting dog was on hand, as were local law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel. Local civic organizations and businesses are welcome to participate. Schertz EMS & Police Department hold Child Safety Seat Inspection for National Child Passenger Safety Month
Gilman Honda in Schertz hosted a free child safety seat inspection on September.28, 2007. The certified- safety- seat technicians; Jason Mabbitt, Kellie Schurlock, and Officer Christopher Duprat of the Schertz Police department were assisted by Mike Jernigan and Stephen Darnell of the Schertz EMS crew. When the technicians were asked, "What are some of the most common errors people make that cause them to fail a safety seat inspection?"...This is what they said..
-The car seat is not tight enough or the seat is not installed correctly . It is important that you read your vehicle's owner's manual in addition to reading the car safety seat installation instructions. In fact, if an accident occurs and the car seat is not installed properly the liability rests with the parent and not the manufacture.
-The car seat is not the right size for the child. Make sure that the car seat is the appropriate size for your child's weight and height.
- The car seat was in a vehicle at the time of an accident. If the car seat has ever been involved in an accident it cannot pass inspection.
-The owners of the car seat are not the original owners . Unless you know the history of your car seat and can verify that it has never been involved in an accident, your car seat cannot pass inspection.
-The car seat has expired . Yes, car seats have an expiration date.
Another tip the technicians shared, * Make sure to send in your registration card when you purchase your car seat so that the manufacture can notify you if there is ever a recall.
For more information on child-seat safety go to www.nada.org/boostforsafety This release was was submitted by Nicole Gill, Customer Relations Manager at Gilman Honda.

September 20, 2007 Westward Ho! Duke Davis and Buckshot Coming to Schertz Civic Center Go back in time and enjoy traditional country music at its best. For one night only, Saturday, September 29 th at 7:00 PM , Duke Davis and Buckshot will be performing "Westward Ho!" at the Civic Center in Schertz
"Westward Ho!" is a theatrical, musical presentation that traverses the history of Western Music. Performed around the setting of a cowboy's campfire, Duke and the boys take you on a 90-minute musical excursion from 1865 up to today in 27 songs. Sprinkled with cowboy poetry and anecdotes of the cowboy, the program is an entertaining and historical retrospect of the evolution of Cowboy and Western Music. Beginning with the old trail songs of the post Civil War era, the program leads you through the turn of the 20 th century, to the Silver Screen Cowboy era of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, up to the popular TV themes of the 1960's, and culminates with popular Western Music of contemporary artists of today.
Duke Davis was raised right here in Schertz , Texas , and has been around the cowboy lifestyle his whole life. His ties to Schertz are so strong that the citizens of this town posthumously dedicated Pickrell Park to the memory of his grandfather, t he late Judge Jack Pickrell.
Duke graduated from Schertz Cibolo High School in 1965 and immediately began his professional career as a musician and songwriter and since that time he has appeared in concert with many of the top names in the music business. Duke moved to California in 1979 where he assembled his award winning band, "Buckshot", which continues to be one of the finest western bands in the country. In 1994, he moved outside of Santa Fe to pursue his first love of horse training and was the owner/operator of the High Mesa Horse Ranch in Lamy, New Mexico . In 2002, he sold the ranch and moved to Colorado , where he still trains and brokers horses as the owner/operator of the Osita Ranch near Guffey, Colorado .
Duke's rugged cowboy image and horsemanship skills gave him the opportunity to work as an actor, mostly doing 'hard riding' in television, western films and commercials. His seven albums ("Time To Ride"; "All Points West"; "Chase The Wind"; "Follow The Wagon"; "Blue Texas Sky"; "Legacy"; and "Westward Ho!") have all received international acclaim and recognition. His dedication to the preservation of the working cowboy has driven him to portray the cowboy ideals in his art, and when he is not performing his music and poetry, or producing other artists, he often can be found 'day working' on ranches all over the West.
Duke has been featured at virtually every major cowboy gathering and western festival in the country, and has performed in Canada , France , Holland , England and Switzerland . He and his wife, Ruthie, run Rockin' Double "D" Productions, which started out as an independent record label in 1983 producing alternative western music. To date, Duke has produced over 220 records, many by some of the top cowboy artists in western music today. His production company produces rodeos, festivals and WESTERN FANDANGO package shows that supply events with cowboy entertainment and chuck wagon cooking.
Davis is regarded as a 'renaissance man'. He has been in the music industry and active in the cowboy and ranching lifestyle since his graduation. He has received numerous awards and nominations for his endeavors as a musician, singer, songwriter, producer and poet from the Country Music Associations of America; the California Country Music Association; the Music Industry Coalition; the Western Music Association; the Academy of Western Artists , and he is a published author having released a book of his original contemporary cowboy poetry. In 2005, Duke had a #1 song in Western Swing Music entitled "Texas Moon". Currently, he resides in Guffey , Colorado , where he owns and operates the Osita Ranch. The talents of Duke Davis have taken him all over the world and garnered many accolades for him, but he politely says, "I'm the happiest when I'm just forkin' a good horse and chewin' the fat with a friend!"
Admission to Westward Ho! is $10 at the door. Seniors 65 and over and kids under 16 are $8 at the door. For further information, contact Civic Center Manager Jessica Robinson at (210) 619-1611 .
