A Capital Improvement Project (CIP) is any project that maintains or expands the City’s facilities or infrastructure. Projects may include work on drainage ways, water and wastewater facilities, roadways, parks, or City buildings. Because of the variety of projects that are classified as being a CIP, the timeframes and budgets associated with those projects can be equally varied – although CIPs generally have a total cost greater than $50,000. Due to the complexity of some projects, it can take years of work to complete the planning and design work required prior to construction, while other projects can be designed and constructed within the same fiscal year. Funding for CIPs can also vary depending on the project type and available City resources.
