Michael Carpenter was first elected mayor on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012. He has since been re-elected twice.
Mayor Carpenter previously served on the city council beginning in May of 2005, and was re-elected in 2007, 2009, and 2011. Carpenter is the eighth mayor of Schertz and only the third Schertz mayor in 34 years following long tenures by His Honor Mayor Earl Sawyer (1982-1994) and His Honor Mayor Hal Baldwin (1994-2012).
Carpenter has been active in the community as a volunteer in many organizations, having been a youth sports coach in both BVYA (Buffalo Valley Youth Association) and SAYSAT (Soccer Association For Youth of San Antonio, Inc.), volunteering as a member of the Knights of Columbus and serving in several ministries at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma. He is a national sales manager at Tech Data, an IT distribution firm, where he is in his 18th year.
The Memphis, Tennessee native is married to Missy (also from Memphis), his wife of over 20 years. Missy is a Texas realtor and also works part-time as an interventional radiology technologist at Northeast Methodist Hospital. Michael and Missy have two sons.
Mr. Carpenter graduated with honors in 1994 from State Technical Institute at Memphis (now Southwest Tennessee Community College) with an associate’s degree in paralegal studies. In 1996, he graduated with honors from the University of Memphis with a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies. In 1996 and 1997, he attended St. Mary’s University master’s program in clinical psychology. In 2004, he graduated from Webster University with a master’s degree in business administration.
